Orange County, California (July 27, 2019) – Orange County Board of Education Trustees Mari Barke (R-Los Alamitos) and Lisa Sparks, Ph.D., (R-Newport Beach) have endorsed Mayor Diane Dixon (R-Newport Beach) for the 74 th Assembly District seat. She is challenging freshman Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Laguna Beach) for the seat.

“Through her service on the boards of educational institutions and child service agencies, Diane Dixon understands the importance of partnerships between nonprofits, government, families, and the community to improve our schools,” said Barke, whose district includes Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, and several other communities. “I proudly endorse Diane Dixon for State Assembly because she will work to strengthen our students’ education. Diane will bring the community together to help our children succeed.”

“As someone who has made my career in education, I appreciate leaders like Diane Dixon who value our educational system and are willing to act in the best interest of students and families while respecting the important work of educators,” said Dr. Sparks, who represents Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, and several other cities. “I enthusiastically endorse Diane Dixon to be our State Assemblywoman. Diane is the best choice to represent the students, families, and educators of our community.”

“We must strengthen public schools by allowing greater local control instead of one-size-fits-all mandates from Sacramento. Local communities and parents working together with local schools and teachers are the people who best understand the needs of their children,” said Dixon. “I am humbled to have the endorsements of our County Board of Education Trustees Mari Barke and Dr. Lisa Sparks. They know that I will use my experience to help improve our children’s education by advancing our local public schools.”

She is serving her second term as Mayor, and has served as Chair of the Water Quality and Tidelands Committee and member of the Finance Committee for nearly five years, including four years as Chair. During her tenure at City Hall, she has actively engaged city residents, holding over 23 town hall meetings, working closely with local business owners and residents to solve community problems, and initiating numerous neighborhood and community improvement programs.

An active member on several philanthropic community-based boards of directors for nearly four decades, Mayor Dixon has been married for 44 years to career prosecutor Pat Dixon, with whom she has a daughter, a former prosecutor, and three grandchildren.
